M.Sc. - Micro-Biology

About the Course : MICROBIOLOGY is the basic science which deals with the study of microorganisms, their derivatives, biochemical properties, genetic makeup, metabolism and physiology, effects on human health and diseases and their interactions with the ecosystem. The fermentations, biocatalysis, microbial diseases, pathology, diagnostics, molecular techniques, food preservation, biogeochemical cycling, and production of novel compounds rely on microbes. In modern day biology, with upcoming trends of genetic engineering, microbes serve as the model systems for manipulations and applications as they are the simplest organisms and easy to handle. In this regard microbiology lays the foundations of applicative biology. Any other aspect of science is incomplete without a thorough knowledge of Microbiology. Different branches of microbiology lead to better scope and more openings in the fields of food, agriculture and medicine.

Outline of the course : The M.Sc. Microbiology Course is spread over four semesters in two years and offers all aspects of present day demands of industry and R&D. It includes basic studies of Microbial Diversity, Microbiological techniques, Microbial Genetics, Physiology, Immunology and Bioinformatics in the first year followed by applicative aspects such as Molecular Biology, Recombinant DNA Technology, Food, Environmental, Agricultural, Industrial and Medical Microbiology in the final year. All practical aspects concerning the above mentioned subjects are dealt in laboratories so that the students are fully equipped with tools of handling different aspects of Microbiology.

Duration : Two academic years. Each year divided into 2 semesters (4 semesters in total).

Eligibility : B.Sc. degree of Bengaluru University or any other University equivalent thereto with 50% marks (45% marks for SC/ST/Cat-I) in all three optionals in aggregate. The applicant should have studied Chemistry/Biochemistry as an optional subject along with any one of the following subjects.

(a) Bachelor of Agricultural Sciences / Bachelor in Horticulture / Bachelor of Fisheries / Bachelor in Dairy Sciences / Bachelor of Forestry / B.Sc. Honours in Biotechnology / Microbiology / Botony / Zoology/Biology/B.Sc. Biotechnology/B.Sc., Biotechnology (Integrated Course). Students have studied the course mentioned in (B) are eligible provided they have studied Chemistry/Bio-Chemistry as one of the papers. The average marks scored in all optional subjects will be considered for eligibility as per BU norms.

Attendance : 75% attendance is a must for registering for the Bengaluru University examination.

Academic & Extra academic activities : Students are encouraged to give seminars and presentations from the syllabus and latest topics of their choice to make them better communicators. Innovative ways of teaching are adopted by the faculty like the over head projectors, scientific models etc. to explain the concepts in a better manner. The department also arranges for Industrial visits where the students are exposed to the higher equipments and work atmosphere of industrial setups, good manufacturing practices. The students are thus able to interact with eminent professionals who are able to explain and guide them with respect to protocols and placements.

Internal Assessment : Each theory paper is valued for 20 marks and each practical paper is valued for 10 marks for Internal Assessment. Assessment is based on the performance of the student in tests, assignments/charts/models, seminars, attendance, punctuality, interaction relating to subjects during class hours, practical work in laboratory and the overall performance.

Examination : Generally, exams will be conducted every six months in May / June and December /January

Promotion to next year : Full carryover from odd semester to even semester.

Vacation : 2 weeks after I / III and 3 weeks after II semester
