M.Sc. - Applied Genetics

About the Course : Applied Genetics deals with the application of Genetics in Molecular Biology, Developmental Biology, Medicine, Pharmaceutical Industries, Medical Sciences, Agriculture and Horticulture based industries etc.

Outline of the course :The course comprises major areas of Genetics which includes Cell Biology, Cytogenetics, Pharamacogenetics, Molecular Biology, Biochemical techniques, Immunotechnology, Hematology, Quantitative Genetics, Developmental Genetics, Human Genetics and Biotechnology. In addition, it also includes computer and Bio-statistics applications and Bioinformatics.

Duration : Two academic years. Each year divided into 2 semesters (4 semesters in total).

Eligibility : Graduate in Science with minimum of 50% marks in the aggregate of all the optional subjects, with any three of the following subjects : Chemistry, Biochemistry, Botony, Applied Botony, Zoology, Applied Zoology, Environmental Science, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Genetics, Applied Genetics and Sericulture.

Teaching Hours : 
Theory: 4hrs/week/paper
Practical: 8hrs/week/paper

Attendance : 75% attendance is a must for registering for the Bengaluru University examination.

Academic & Extra academic activities : During each semester, each student has to give a seminar on a given topic of his/her interest from the syllabus. Up-to-date report and presentation are evaluated by a team of experts.

Regular seminar programme by experts from different fields of Genetics gives necessary exposure to students in emerging areas in Genetics.

Frequent industrial visits ensure the necessary exposure to students with respect to the new developments in the field and also about the prospects for them after completing the course.

Internal Assessment : Each subject carries 20 marks & 10 marks for internal assessment in theory and Practicals respectively.

Examination : Generally, exams will be conducted every six months in May / June and December /January

Scheme of Examination : As per Bengaluru University regulations.

Scheme of valuation : As per Bengaluru University regulations.

Promotion to next year : Full carryover from odd semester to even semester.

Vacation : 3 weeks (after II Semester only.)
